North Wilkesboro Pool Opening For The Season

Smoot Park is located at 202 Chestnut Street in North Wilkesboro. This park offers picnicking options that are covered. There are playground areas for children.

There is also a pool area that will open on Saturday, May 27 for Memorial weekend.  The fee is $5.00 per single day. An option to purchase a $50.00 season pass is also available. This is cost-effective if able to use the pool area more than ten times during the summer.

June 2 is the official summer opening at 1 p.m. coinciding with local school’s being let out the same day. Monday to Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. and Sunday hours are 1 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. There are also senior swimming hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 11 a.m. and Noon. Free.

Concerts in North Wilkesboro

The Town of North Wilkesboro and Window World will be hosting a number of music events during this summer’s Concerts on the Deck. 

The first event in the series will be held on June 17th. That evening will feature the music of Elonzo Wesley and Wayne Graham.

The concerts will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the third Saturday of the month between June 2023 and October 2023.

The location is 700 CBD Loop at the Yadkin Valley Marketplace. 

The events are free of charge. Food trucks will be on hand. Pets are permitted if on a leash.

Concert Season in Wilkesboro

The Town of Wilkesboro, NC has again arranged for a series of summer concerts named Concerts in the Commons. These music events are held at the Carolina West Wireless Community Commons Pavilion located in downtown Wilkesboro.

The first concerts of the 2023 season were performed by two bands on Saturday, May 13. At 6 p.m. a husband and wife duo, His and Hers, held the stage. 

At 8 p.m. a Tom Petty tribute band aptly named Wildflowers performed many fan favorites, including Refugee, Running Down A Dream, and Don’t Come Around Here No More.

Art Gallery Reception Honoring Ward Nichols

The Wilkes Art Gallery located in North Wilkesboro, NC held an opening night exhibition reception on Friday, May 19. The Gallery has a new exhibit entitled, Of  Wit and Wisdom. This exhibition will be on display from May 19 through June 30. 

The evening honored local artist Ward Nichols for his life achievement in artwork. His work includes paintings and magazine collages. The commissioners of North Wilkesboro approved of conaming C Street with the honorary name Ward Nichols Way.

 

Music was provided by Todd Wright along with hor d’oeuvres and refreshments. The weather cooperated. The street was partially closed to allow for the festivities to be held outdoors. The exhibit also features the art of Adam Kahn, Keegan Watson, and Tom Acosta.

Back from Hiatus in Time for NASCAR Racing in Wilkes

After being on hiatus for 3 years, I am pleased to announce that the Wilkes County Gazette is back in publication. 

Here in Wilkes County, NC, there has been great excitement these past couple of weeks as NASCAR has returned to its roots here.

Last week on May 10, the North Wilkesboro Speedway held an Open House. I attended the event and it was nice to see the updates the track has undergone in recent months in preparation for this Sunday’s All Star Race. The race begins at 8:00 p.m. ET.

On May 18, a Fan Fest Car Hauler Parade was held that traveled from Wilkesboro to North Wilkesboro out to the historic speedway. NASCAR legend Richard Petty was the Grand Marshal of the parade. I was fortunate to see him in person along with many other fans.
